the first warning weather center, bernadette. >> this is the kind of weather pattern where you just want to be smart. we want to show you the radar. a few storms popping up making their way out of bell air into the eastern shores. this batch in southern maryland will skirt by the eastern shores. it is 95 right now in baltimore. look at all those 90s out there. when you factor in the dewpoint it feels like it's 101. take a look at this heat factor. we had a high of nine, the same tomorrow. 98 on wednesday, wednesday probably going to be the peak of everything before we start to see some relief later in the week. in addition to all the week we've been having want to show you the rain update because we haven't focused as much on this because it's been so hot but it's been incredibly hot.

for the year we're down over 8- inches. we really do need some rain out there, we'll have your forecast coming up, mary. >> bernadette, thank you. stay with wjz for forwarning weather coverage. log on to wjz.com. it appears hot weather played a part in a frantic rescue effort. tonight one man is presumed dead. wjz is live. alex demetrick talks to though who saw this unfold. >> reporter: it appears like two friends who were boating in the bush river were trying to stay cool by jumping in the river, that swim turned deadly. crews using sonar and dogs searched the river looking for 35-year-old hanavar who slipped under the water. he was with 34-year-old sunny sing at the tail end of a hot day. >> two guys were out on a boat, they decided to cool off.

they jumped overboard. one of them got away from the boat, the other tried to help him. >> he watched them then realized that the man was in distress and needed help. >> reporter: those calls for help brought two neighbors out in boats and they rescued the man still struggling to stay afloat. >> it was really hard to get the guy on the boat because he was just so panicky. michelle's husband made the rescue and brought singh to his boat. >> a lot of people called him a hero but he says it felt empty because he was not able to save the other guy. >> he felt he was going to go under himself. and that's why he swam back to the boat. >> reporter: what began as a search and rescue sunday became a recovery effort today. >> it's not an exact science with the tide and the wind, we pretty much are going with experience on how to look for

them. >> reporter: all during that search, agonizing what ifs for those who wish they could have helped. kai. >> police say neither man was wearing a life jacket when they went for their swim. right now baltimore police are searching for suspects in a deadly home invasion. jessica is in the newsroom with more on the investigation. jessica. >> reporter: mary the gunman shot three people inside a north baltimore home. it happened in the 5000 brook of lovian road. a man died of his injuries while another woman survived. detectives believe the shooter was targeting a man the others were bystanders. it is possible the shooting was drug related. >> there are no arrests in the case. the search for a gunman continues in howard county after two people were shot in a beauty salon in a busy shopping

center. derek valcourt reports with more on the search for a suspect. >> reporter: when gunfire erupted inside the nail and hair care spa saturday night. >> it was frightening. >> reporter: christa lopez was one of the employees who ran for cover. pham shot the mother of his two children. he is also accused of shooting the male friend who was waiting to pick her up at the end of her shift. >> i heard what i thought were fire crackers. i look around and i saw a man who was running with a gun in his hand. >> reporter: police found pham's vehicle abandoned. >> everybody is hoping he gets

found. the community really helped railroad the -- really helped, the salon is getting back to business. >> i guess it can happen any place but it's not going to deter me from coming back. >> reporter: anyone with information on pham's whereabouts is urged to call police who are offering a 2, $2,500 reward for information that helps with his capture. racing to get baltimore's grand prix in check before a major deadline. tonight they spoke about the events financial health, wjz is live downtown along with what will be the track. mike hellgren goes one on one with those in charge, mike. >> reporter: well mary, they have city support and major financial muscle and they

promise the managerial and money mess left last year won't happen again. with just seven weeks to go, the new group in charge raced on says it will be ready and revealed three new sponsors, dr. pepper, sonoco. >> we're polishing off details. >> reporter: investors remain committed and they want to stabilize the race over the length of their five year contract. >> we're here in 2012, 2013 with a five year contract. we plan on facilitating that and hopefully get a deal for the next five years. >> reporter: sales just started, last year's event drew 160,000 spectators and the race sold 110,000 tickets. track work will begin later this month and continue right up to the race and drivers are ready to hit that track which is slightly tweaked through downtown with speeds hitting 180 miles per hour. >> the event itself was an

with more, captain jeff. >> reporter: this water main break is right in the heart of downtown on light street. lots of water flowing out of this break. it's flowing south along lu in, bar street continuing south along pratt. we can see some of the water, some of the muddy water pool into the inner harbor. we're going to pan out a little bit more. you will be able to see quite a bit of muddy water coming down the road here and it's creating quite a river. traffic on light street is blocked several blocks north of this so nobody is coming down light street. if you're heading downtown, find another way around. reporting live, i'm captain jeff long. >> quite a visual site. i know we'll check back with you on this story. maryland lawmakers may still be able to reach a consensus that would put expanded gambling on the ballot and put hundreds of millions of the dollars in the state education fund. political reporter pat warren

better there's a look at it at franklin boulevard. this traffic report is brought to you by subway. stop in and try the santa fe melt, for a limited time only at subway. a fire between career and volunteer firefighters. andrea fujii talks about it all depends on who's getting the money. >> reporter: firefighters are fired up after volunteer firefighters sent out this release. warning the public about misleading requests. >> there's nothing scandalous about it there's no scams going on. >> reporter: current firefighters have been calling for donations since 1990 on average collect about $100,000 a year. much of that they say goes to

buying smoke detectors for the community. volunteer fire firefighters say if they want to fund raise for them they only fund raise through mailers. they say they need donations to survive. >> this has caused a huge conflict between the union and volunteers and i don't want that. >> reporter: the main thing both side agree on is they both want to save lives. >> if you call 911 you're going to get help. it's just unfortunate that it's come to this. >> reporter: now the volunteer firefighters association president says he knows at least six people who say they've been confused donating by phone to the professional firefighters when they thought they were giving to the volunteers. >> the firefighters union says the telemarketers are limited to a script and are discipline first-degree they stray from

it. maryland's half marathon organizers are getting ready for next year's race. but today they took a break to give a donation that helped raise $100 million for cancer research. >> reporter: the half marathon is the state's fasters growing race. organizers marked four years of the run that raises thousands for the university of maryland's cancer center. the winner takes home big prizes. expect this, it's the county cup which the word to the county where the winner lives this year it goes to baltimore county. >> of course the cup is back in its rightful home. >> reporter: this year the half marathon raised about $260,000. bringing the four year total to nearly $1 million for cancer research. the race winds through neighborhoods in howell and baltimore county. >> as soon as we eliminate cancer i will be happy to end the race but that's not happening any time soon and we want to get all the counties

we're following breaking news. a water main break on pratt street is sending muddy water into the inner harbor. let's check in with bernadette woods. she's checking another round of

dangerous heat we're dealing with this week. >> reporter: some thunderstorms have popped up we will show you first warning doppler radar. we have a couple making their way through hartford county. those are winding their way to the eastern shore. and all of these are drifting off to the southeast. also a thunderstorms across the district right now that also will be moving down to the southeast. in addition to the thunderstorms, the heat. a heat advisory is in effect in southern parts of baltimore county and this is why. temperatures are out there 94 is where we sit right now. and the dewpoints have been climbing also. we're at 69 degrees right now. when you factor that in with the temperature feels like 100 in baltimore, 100 in dc. close to 100 for a lot of other people everyone 93 in cumberland. our high so far today 95 degrees way above the average. not quite the average of 104. and we're going to be above average for the next few afternoons. this heat is going to continue and this is why. take a look at a snapshot of the country. temperatures in the 90s all the

way up to the canadian border back into the rockies and all of that has to cycle through going our direction. tomorrow our temperatures go up. they stay there on wednesday until they start to back off the second half of the week. the reason we will get some relief is this cold front right up in here. there's not so much to advise. first up is a separate front that's trying to leave us. it produces a few of the thunderstorms we're seeing out there this afternoon. as the next front comes our way. we're going to see storms through wednesday. some of these could be strong on wednesday. thursday the front will move through that will keep the chance for showers and thunderstorms around again so on thursday afternoon. after that it will try to push off to the south and that's when our temperatures are going to come down. we do have a little bit of a breeze out of the southwest at

this for us. >> as we've seen in the past, water main breaks could have a huge impact for businesses. we have been calling around, we've been checking in with restaurants and business. a couple of them have been reporting closures but most will remain open. it gets real muddy because it breaks up the ground that is underneath there so the water begins to flow and it's rushing down there into the inner harbor. what you don't see is drews drew -- crews at the scene. that's fairly typical because they have to figure out e xactly where the shut the water. a couple of years ago there was a huge water main break basically shut down a good part of the city for a number of days. a number of tourists attractions had to close it was a big loss of business for the

city. a few years ago we did a special report on the aging infrastructure in baltimore. you have to remember a lot of these pipelines are very old. they've been dealing with these problems off and on for a number of years. estimates to repair these problems so you don't run into this run into hundreds of millions of the dollars. there's been debates on how to fund these projects. in the meantime with a lack of funding you're just going to see more and more of these problems that's what the experts are predicting. mary that's the latest we have now back to you. >> i think all of us have been paying more attention to it because our water bills just went up. yes they did. >> last week knowing that the infrastructure needs to be repaired. when they finally do get to the scene, when they shut the water off a lot of times they have to dig right there, open the street up and get to work on those pipes. >> and mary you know they just announced here about a week ago

the city was launching a new initiative where they were sending in specialized equipment into some of these water mains that they identified as most accident prone the ones that could really have a problem. the city trying to take some proactive measures to try to prevent these water main breaks. they simply can't get to all of them, here they have this big mess right downtown. the lake mason building is to the left of that. there's a lot of people that are going to be affected by this mary if they don't get this fixed very soon. >> people are remarking the gray color, we'll talk to dtw and bring that to you. >> we will continue to bring you up daytimes as soon as -- bring you updates as soon as we get them. a randall the apartment building goes up in flames, now investors are trying to determine how it started.

rochelle is in and brings us the story. >> reporter: investigators have not determined what caused this fire and they say it could be weeks before residents know what sent their homes into flames. it was late sunday when this you tube video was shot. the fire causing a glow in the dark skies in a matter of minutes. >> we were fortunate that we were not over there. >> reporter: sherry williams lives across from where the fire devoured her neighbors hopes. >> everybody over there, everything was lost. so it's just sad. >> reporter: her husband says residents could only stand and watch helplessly as things burned. >> it could have been my apartment. >> reporter: traveling through the attic to another building. >> the biggest challenge is getting up into the attic and getting it out. the very limited access, once it vented through the roof we

were able to get ladder pipes into the fire and extinguish it that way. >> reporter: it took nearly two hours for firefighters to put the flames out. the damage to the building is severe. surprisingly everyone made it out alive. you can hear them going off in the video. >> a bad time in the morning. everybody was asleep and they were awoke by the smoke detectors and got out. >> reporter: chopper 13 over the scene show it is smoke, fire and water damage left behind. repair costs in the hundreds of thousands. and the apartment complex was able to put residents and units that were vacant. kai, back to you. >> rochelle thank you. 11 families were given a place to stay by the red cross. police arrest three men keted to a shooting in -- men connected to a shooting in a bar: detectives say they shot a man saturday during an

argument at the el rancho blanco tavern. at last check the victim is in critical condition. 1,000 people volunteered to find two missing girls. >> reporter: kai police say that civilians looking for the cousins will have little benefit. the two disappeared on friday afternoon after leaving their grandmother's home for a bike ride. police say that the girls bikes and a purse were found near a lake but so far all the leads have turned up empty. police say there are no indications of foul play, they have searched the lake and interviewed registered sex offenders in the area. the fbi is now helping with that search. kai back to you. >> family members are cooperating with investigators? -z -- we are continuing to follow breaking news. a main break in baltimore. mike hellgren has the update

for us. >> reporter: we don't nope the dimensions of the water break. we hear there might be flooding in one building. if we can go down to me on light street. if we look down light street you can see the muddy mess down there. they have it closed off in that direction but they are still letting some cars through here. you can see all the water that's flowed downhill to where i am. then if we walk down pratt street here you can see just how backed up all the traffic is because of this water main break. this is just a mess down here in all directions. and with the water is not necessarily all that deep, but it's definitely creating some havoc because this is rush hour and again if we're looking down light street, you can see where they have that road closed. it's near lumbart street, that's where this water main break started. and they are still actively trying to figure out what caused it. still trying to figure out how

large this break is. we've been doing stories of the aging infrastructure, it may have been the heat. we will continue to update you when we can. >> mike, just last week in the news we were talking about two million residents asked to conserve water because they were fixing this water main in southwest baltimore. the aging infrastructure has definitely been in the news. and if you've lived in baltimore for the last five to 10 years you know this has come up in critical spots in downtown baltimore. this is going to be a situation that commuters are clearly dealing with tonight and will deal with tomorrow because many times they have to go in and dig down to see these pipes and this is on a major route on light street. mike, thank you. we see crews, dpw crews behind you there.

we will continue to bring you this story and bring you the latest as it becomes available. in other news, freedom for the two american tourists abducted in the egyptian peninsula. they were kidnapped by a man who was demanding the release of his uncle from prison. the kidnapper said he let the americans go because they promised to work on his uncles case. this landslide cut off about 300 people at an rv park but no one was reported injured or missing. it occurred around 25 miles from where four people are presumed dead following a landslide on thursday. time for a quick look at some of the other stories that you will see on tomorrow morning's edition of the

of pediatrics looks at what's in those fillings. researchers found fillings made with bpa may be linked to behavioral and emotional problems as children get older. >> those children have a higher risk of some type of depression or anxiety or other social psychological issues. >> dental fillings made with bpa have been popular because they are the color of teeth but research has linked a chemical to hormone disruption. advocates have had it banned in baby bottles and other items. but research states that more research is needed and it's yet to determine how much bpa are in fillings and whether it gets into the body. >> i would not avoid dental work because of this risk. >> reporter: there are bpa free

a water main break continues to cause a mess in downtown baltimore. wjz is live on the scene. let's go back to mike hellgren. mike. >> reporter: it's certainly chaos for all the traffic down here. most of the action is happening just up light street near lumbart and redwood. we're seeing more fire trucks coming into the scene. we have reports that the record here is buckled and that means it could be a very long time to

make these repairs. fire trucks are on the scene, they've closed off light street just around redwood and there is major gridlock on pratt street. greg if we can just look down here and see all the cars that are backed up because of this. now as for the cause of the water main break, we do not know at this point. we don't know how large of a water main break there is. there could be some floodings in some of the buildings. the downtown partnerships we were just talking to them they said they were ready to assist any business and of course they are concerned because of just how busy the thoroughfare is. you can hear some of the frustration going on here right now. no reports of any injuries. we're still working to work on the exact cause and how long it will take to fix this water main break. but it certainly is a terrible time for this to happen and there is, we do know there is significant damage to the road surface. so we're going to continue to monitor that situation. and we still see water flowing here and mud in the streets we're not everyone sure if the water has been turned off yet
